Ambitions
I am constantly striving for what is impossible: perfection. In my work and personal life I am always looking for ways to improve on quality and stability. I definitely prefer quality over quantity in everything that I do, and will put in the extra effort to ensure that something is done right the first time.
I am looking for a career where I can put that mild obsession to use in the development of information interaction on the web. The web is amazing in it’s infinite possibilities, and in how it is constantly changing and improving upon itself. Part of the exciting challenge of being a part of web development is keeping up with all of the new and emerging technologies such as HTML5, CSS3, AJAX and cloud computing.
In the short term I am looking at establishing a solid position with a respectable company that is looking to make a positive difference in the world. I am not looking to become rich, but I would rather give something back to the world that will help.
In the long term I want to collaborate on the next generation of the web; helping to make it more accessible and usable for more and more people. I believe the web can be integrated into many more facets of our lives, invisible yet integral to how we interact with information and each other.
Experience
I began dabbling in creating websites in 1997, with a free application called Frontpage Express. I became proficient in table-based layouts with scrambled source code and a million spacer GIFs to keep things in place. I feel like learning the wrong way to do things in the beginning gave me a better appreciation of the correct way.
As I read more and more web design blogs I discovered that there were reasons why good browsers like Netscape and Internet Explorer 5 Mac (at the time) were rendering my designs incorrectly: I was designing them for an Internet Explorer browser that was not correctly interpreting web standards. Thanks to the Web Standards Project and the influential words of popular designers like Jeffrey Zeldman, Eric Meyer and Tantek Çelik, I was able to begin down the path of properly utilizing standards and standard practices in my work.
I established my own web design business with a partner in 2003 and began developing for clients that I am still working with to this day. Emphasis was placed on developing websites the right way using standards, and focusing on the customer’s needs and their content, rather than a flashy, primarily graphic presentation.
